Shippra is a research initiative in education. We sit where the work actually happens — the register, the reading room, the examination cell, the fee counter — and study how an institution keeps what it knows, and where it lets it slip. Then we build the software the answer asks for.
Where it
began
Every institution we sat in was keepingthe same student in four different books.
A register in one room, a fee ledger in another, an examination list in a third, a lending card in the reading room. Different books, different hands, the same student written down again and again. Nobody was careless — the institution simply had no memory of itself, so its people had to be that memory instead.
That sent us after the harder question underneath. If an institution cannot say plainly what it holds and who holds it, what else can it not do? It cannot teach from its own history — last term’s marks, the attendance that explains them, the reading a class actually got through. And it cannot do research at all, because research begins with being able to find what you already have. A catalogue nobody can search is a collection nobody can use. Everything the initiative has done since follows from that one chain: better records, better teaching, better research.
The work
so far
One memory of the institution— the catalogue, the coursework, the examination, the admission, the fee, the person, the seat on the bus. Written down once.
Each is a part of the institution we studied first and wrote software for second. Everything we build reads from that one record, and writes back into it.

Four places a recordstops being written twice

1.
The catalogue, the circulation desk and the digital shelf stop being three systems that quietly disagree about what the library holds. A scholar can search the whole collection, which is where research begins.

2.
Question papers, seating, valuation and tabulation stop travelling between rooms as paper somebody has to guard. The mark a valuer awards reaches the transcript without being copied out again.

3.
A student is written down once, at the first enquiry, and stays written down. No office re-types a name that another office has already taken care to spell correctly.

4.
Fees stop being reconciled by hand at the end of a month that is already over. The counter, the ledger and the register finally agree on the same student.

A database per institution
What your institution knows about its students lives in a database of its own. Never pooled with anybody else’s, and yours to take away whole — the record belongs to the institution, not to us.
Your domain, your name on the record
Every app runs on your own domain, with your logo and your colours, so a parent or a visiting scholar sees the institution — never a supplier.
Nothing to host or patch
No server to buy, patch or pray about on results day — only a browser. The desk keeps working when the connection drops.
Fits what you already use
If your teachers already enter marks somewhere else, those marks still land in the academic record. Nobody types a name twice — including into us.

What an institutionstops needing
We would rather be judged on what we take away than on what we add. An institution should not have to buy a server room, a consultant and a filing cabinet in order to remember its own students. Each figure below is a property of how the software is built — true on the first day, for everyone.
Servers to run
Nothing to buy, size, cool, patch or replace on a refresh cycle. There is no rack, so there is nothing to power overnight.
Database per institution
Its own, and isolated. What an institution knows about itself is never filed in a cabinet it shares with strangers.
Apps reading one record
What would otherwise be eight vendors, eight logins and eight sets of the same student to keep in agreement.
Registers written twice
Entries, slips and receipts are born as records. Printing stays a choice — for the certificate a family will frame, never for the copy nobody opens.
These are architectural facts, not measured outcomes. We are not going to quote you sheets of paper or tonnes of carbon we have not counted — education has had enough of numbers nobody can check. As institutions come on board we will publish what we can genuinely measure, and show our working. It would be a poor sort of research initiative that asked to be believed rather than read.

They began as notes taken in staff rooms and record rooms. They are now the rules that decide what goes into the work — and what stays out of it.
The copy is the enemy
Almost every wasted hour we traced led back to the same record existing in more than one place. So it exists once, and every office reads it. Paper is not the problem — a child should draw on it, and a family should frame a certificate. The eleventh copy is the problem.
An institution should own what it knows
Its own database, its own domain, its own name on the record. Everything it holds can be handed over, moved or walked away with — never kept hostage in somebody else’s table, and never lost with the person who kept it.
The lightest system wins
Copies that never had to be made, and compute that sleeps when nobody is asking. What an institution never has to buy, power or throw away is the part we care about most.
