Operational Overview

What this guidecovers

A circulation desk does not need special hardware. LibMS reads barcodes and QR codes through the camera of any ordinary smartphone, tablet or webcam, straight from the browser — quick enough to keep a queue of students moving between periods. A dedicated scanner still works, if the desk already owns one.

Hardware & Environment Requirements

  • Any smartphone or tablet with a 5MP+ auto-focus camera (iOS 14+ or Android 9+)
  • Optional: Standard USB or Bluetooth HID 1D/2D Barcode Scanner (plug-and-play)
  • Optional: Receipt printer for physical checkout slips

Open LibMS Circulation Counter PWA

Open `libms.yourcampus.edu/counter` on your smartphone or tablet browser. Tap "Add to Home Screen" to launch LibMS in full-screen PWA mode.

Enable Camera Optical Scanning

Tap the camera icon next to the "Accession No / Patron ID" input field. When prompted by your mobile browser, grant camera permissions to allow instant real-time video frame decoding.

Pro Tip: The optical scanner includes continuous auto-focus and low-light flashlight toggle controls built directly into the UI.

03.

Execute Rapid Check-Out & Return Flow

Point the device camera at the accession barcode on the inner cover. LibMS reads it, brings up the title, and waits for the patron card to complete the issue.

04.

If the Wi-Fi Drops, Keep Working

If the campus Wi-Fi drops during a busy hour, LibMS keeps recording issues and returns on the device itself, and writes them back the moment the connection returns. The queue never has to stop.

Do we still need handheld USB laser barcode guns?

No. The camera does the job on its own. If your counter already has a USB scanner, plug it in — LibMS reads it just the same.
